Taking a stern stand against institutional child abuse, Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation has officially filed a formal complaint with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The complaint, addressed directly to Priyank Kanoongo, Honourable Member of the NHRC, draws immediate attention to the horrific sexual assault of a 14-year-old minor boy at a residential religious institution in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
As reported in the media, a 14-year-old student at Darul Murul Taj Madrasa (Tajbagh area, Nagpur) was sodomised earlier this week.
The perpetrator has been identified as 26-year-old Atay Rasool alias Tanif, a cleric. He has been booked under the POCSO Act but remains absconding.
Around 10 other minor students from different parts of the country are currently residing at the facility. The Sakkardara police are reportedly probing if more children were targeted by the accused.
In its official submission, SNU highlighted a catastrophic failure in ensuring the safety and bodily integrity of minor children in residential institutions. We have asked for immediate arrest of the accused, counselling of the victim, verification whether other students housed at the facility were subjected to similar abuse, and the local Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to inspect the madrasa and, if necessary, safely relocate the remaining 10 minor students to a secure, government-approved childcare facility.
