Sewa Nyaya Utthan Seeks Action Against School Over Buffalo Slaughter on Campus and Student Involvement

Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation has submitted a formal complaint to National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Member Shri Priyank Kanoongo seeking urgent intervention following reports that a buffalo was slaughtered within the premises of Shalimar Convent Higher Secondary School, Shahjahanabad, Bhopal, and that school students were subsequently compelled to clean blood, carcass remains, and internal organs from the premises.

The school is located adjacent to a mosque. According to information received by SNU and widely reported by local citizens, the slaughter was carried out inside the school compound, with students present and directly exposed to graphic animal butchery.

More alarmingly, students are reported to have been made to handle and clean blood, animal remains, and internal organs following the slaughter on school premises.

Educational institutions are required to provide a secure and nurturing environment for students. Exposing minors to graphic scenes of animal slaughter – and allegedly compelling them to clean its remains from the floor – constitutes a grave violation of the rights, dignity, safety, and psychological well-being of children.

The incident also raises serious concerns regarding compliance with applicable municipal, public health, sanitation, and child protection norms. Local activists have already approached the police seeking action regarding the conduct of animal slaughter at a location where such activity is not permitted.

We have submitted a formal complaint to NHRC Member Shri Priyank Kanoongo seeking immediate cognizance of the matter.

We have requested the Commission to direct the concerned authorities to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident and to ascertain whether students were exposed to or involved in cleaning blood, carcass remains, or internal organs from the premises.

We have further requested that those found responsible for the violation of child rights be punished accordingly.

Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation will continue to monitor this matter until an independent inquiry is ordered and accountability is established for the treatment of children at Shalimar Convent Higher Secondary School, Bhopal.
