Sewa Nyaya Utthan Files Complaint Over Inappropriate Performance at School Event in West Bengal

A viral video from Kolkata shows girls at a school event recreating the “towel dance” from the song Mere Khwabon Mein from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, originally performed by Kajol. The performance reportedly took place during a school event, raising serious concerns about the dignity and protection of minors.

Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation has filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission of India seeking an inquiry into the role of school authorities and national guidelines to prevent sexualised portrayals of schoolgirls in educational programmes.

The Foundation has also questioned the ‘U’ certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification to the film.

Need for Institutional Safeguards

The viral video illustrates how normalisation of certain portrayals in entertainment media can influence behaviour among minors and in educational spaces. When such performances involve minors and occur within schools, the issue becomes not merely cultural but also a matter of child rights and institutional responsibility.
