A terrible tragedy hit a Pakistani Hindu refugee family in Jodhpur. Lakshman Ram, his wife Soorti Devi, and their four kids – two daughters and two sons – came to India in 2020 to start a new life. Hindu families with young daughters often flee to India in desperation. But they lost everything in a fire in October, said to be caused by a short circuit.
They were preparing for a wedding ceremony for all their children in November. Both daughters are above 18 and both sons are above 24. Poverty often makes such families organise a single wedding for their children.
Now their modest cash savings, gifts, clothing, and silver jewellery have been reduced to ashes. They aren’t citizens yet and hence not eligible for any govt aid.
